Alison - thanks so much for your poignant account. As a privileged, able-bodied male, with no taxing duties to family, no student debt - my two full, glorious years as a adjunct at UBC (journalism), filled with admiration and love for my students, came to an abrupt end when my 35 years worth of experience no longer were deemed sufficient to continue teaching. Our experiences cannot be compared, I realize that. But I do understand the loss. Thank you for your eloquence and elegiac understatement. Thank you.
Thank you, Zaide, for the read, and taking time to respond. My heart goes out to the mess of contract teaching. I am so grateful to be free of it, and writing and finding me way. The hierarchy, in so many spheres, is not healthy.
Lulu, thanks for the read and taking time to respond. I'm truly enjoying working on my The Unschool for Writers, on Substack--please check it out if you haven't already. I am posting a monthly discussion space for exercises/prompts, and as it grows, workshops of some form may happen. At the moment, this type of teaching is a big draw for me! Those who are involved are growing more so, with comments and sharing--all good!
Thanks for sharing your story, Alison! The path you chose shouldn't be this difficult. I hope you are finding more happiness and success in your writing. Big hugs!
If you want to talk about privilege… Dr. Bel court and Dr. Tate are two brilliant creative writing Indigenous Professors with PhDs but only have assistant professorships. Please remind me how much education Keith Maillard has( he’s a full professor at UBC).

Hi Allison. Thank for this piece. I'm so sorry your colleagues treated you this way. Are you planning on doing Zoom workshops in the future?

Bye. I'm not allowing petty comments from anonymous troll accounts.
