Welcome to Truth & Consequences
“Truth or Consequences” was the title of my first ever professional publication, circa 1994 in Geist Magazine where I published the majority of my writing over a roughly 25 year period.
This month all of my work has been removed from Geist in relation (retaliation?) to an argument over my involvement in supporting the writer Steven Galloway’s right to due process and subsequently penning an expose which proves how and why his life was destroyed over an unproven allegation of rape.
Such is the price for standing up for the principles enshrined in The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and the The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
I will be posting more about the Geist fiasco soon but for now let me just say I’m taking my writing back to square one by reclaiming the title of that first publication, but exchanging the “or Consequences” for “and Consequences” and setting out to expose the hard truths facing Canadian Writing (CanLit) and discussing the consequences of a country’s literature being dismantled by the dark comedy of intolerance and illiberalism.
In 1994 when I held that first publication in my hand I never thought it possible that I’d one day be taking that same title to fight for due process and free speech while battling a literary community that embraces blacklists. So it goes.
If you’ve been following my writing on UBC Accountable and the Galloway fiasco then you will certainly want to sign up. This April Galloway’s defamation case is going before the courts over a SLAPP motion for eight days and I will be publishing daily reports.
And if you don’t know what a SLAPP motion is then you are certainly going to want to sign up as I’ll be posting easy to follow explanations of the Galloway Defamation suit so that you can follow along and understand why this case will likely turn out to be the most important trial in the history of Canadian defamation and a milestone in arts and culture.
So if you are one of those people who has witnessed online defamation and hoped that someone would finally take the bullshit off Twitter and into a court of law, then this is your chance to subscribe now for a front row seat.
You will get the facts, both sides of the arguments and the simple legal context you need to make sense of it all.
The Galloway trial is sure to be an historic event in Canadian law and letters, so sign up now and don’t miss a thing.
Donations and paid subscriptions are greatly appreciated and will increase the time I can spend getting the truth out on a number of important stories and more articles and interviews you won’t want to miss.
And please, tell your friends!
